Rebels tough it out to podium in Lagos

Act 2 GC32 Racing Tour 2019, Lagos Portugal – FINAL DAY

After an intense four days of racing in Portugal the INEOS Rebels finish the GC32 World Championship 2019 with a third-place finish. It’s their second consecutive podium since the tour began back in May in Villasimius, Sardinia.

Conditions took a similar turn to the previous days of the 2019 GC32 World Championship with the sun blazing down on the Lagos course with little sign of a consistent breeze. This again led to a short delay in racing to allow the sea breeze to fill, giving the squad more time to meet England and Tottenham Hotspur footballer, Eric Dier who became the 6th Rebel for the day, including joining the crew for an adrenaline fuelled Speed Challenge on the GC32 foiling catamaran.

Once the conditions filled five races were completed and it was relentless racing for the Rebels from start to finish. It began in the first race (R14) with an intense match race battle with their nearest placed rivals Oman Air before a collision with Red Bull Extreme Sailing in the next race (R15) resulted in boat damage and a one point penalty and saw Red Bull disqualified from the race.

Despite a crack to the starboard hull the team carried on, placing fifth in race 16 followed by a zero to hero moment after the Rebels fought back from last place to cross the line first (R17). However, a two-point penalty was received due to a collision with CHINAone on the start line. The team finished with a second in the final race of the day (R18) was enough to secure a third place overall.

The result leaves the team second overall on the GC32 Racing Tour 2019 scoreboard with the circuit continuing next month with the 38th Copa del Rey MAPFRE, Palma, Spain 30 July – 3 August. www.gc32racingtour.com

“We didn’t have a great day, especially in the first three races. We were quite aggressive and pushed it too hard and the penalties followed. However, we can take positives that in one of those races we went from dead last to win the race and that counted towards securing the place on the podium.

“We are still developing our skills on the GC32 and when you look at Alinghi who are veterans of the class they sailed really well with confidence and ticked all the boxes with good boat speed & handling. Perhaps we put ourselves under too much pressure, but we set ourselves high standards and that’s why we are here, it’s been really good for the team with great racing.”

Rob Wilson, Sailing Team Coach;

“It was a tough start to the day, it was very light and shifty on the course and there was a lot of waiting around for the north westerly wind to come in. Once we did start racing it was still reasonably shifty and we struggled at times to get out the start line. Later on in the day, particularly the last two races we really got into the swing of things and got a first and second so it was a really good finish to the day and we learnt some good lessons, especially around speed and boat handling - so we can certainly take that away with us to work on for Palma.”
