A day of two halves in Villasimius

The opening day of the GC32 Villasímius Cup saw a day of two halves. The Sardinian sun and moderate breeze of race one was a stark contrast to race two that saw to USA’s Argo capsize as the breeze ripped up a big swell. With the breeze continuing to build, the race committee abandoned the day after just two races.

The penultimate event of the 2018 GC32 Racing Tour started with a light 6-7 knots and after a slight delay racing got underway. INEOS TEAM UK delivered a solid start leading the fleet at the top mark, but a lack of boat speed saw the British team fall back on the final leg to finish third. By the start of race two the breeze had built with a vengeance and led to the Americans capsize on the blustery course. After a duel with Realteam, INEOS TEAM UK took second place leaving them on joint points overnight, alongside French teams, NORAUTO and Zoulou at the top of the leaderboard.

Helmsman and skipper, Ben Ainslie gave his thoughts on the day. ‘We got ourselves into a really good position in the opening race but we weren’t able to get our boat speed going, we lost ground and ended up finishing third.

“The breeze was building throughout the day and really came on in the second race, it became all about boat handling as the sea state deteriorated, the guys did a really good job onboard getting the boat round the course to finish second.

“Although a little frustrated by the first race, overall we’ve come off the water in a good position”.
