Winning start on a frustrating day

Act 1 GC32 Racing Tour 2019, Villasimius Italy – Day 1

INEOS Rebels UK took the win in the only race of the day after light and frustrating conditions in Sardinia.

Frustrating day in Sardinia

The day started promisingly with the ten international teams heading out in a steady south westerly. However, conditions quickly changed once on the racecourse with the breeze becoming a much lighter easterly.

Race one got underway on time in 7-8 knots and INEOS Rebels helmsman, Ben Ainslie made a great start on the pin end with Red Bull Sailing Team close behind. The fleet then split with the Rebels taking to the right of the course and leading around the top mark. Full foiling action downwind action saw the British team extend their lead and control of the fleet around the next mark before going on to win the race after a close finish with Franck Cammas and his French team Norauto.

Conditions were becoming even lighter and Principal Race Officer Stuart Childerley was keen to get race two underway as quick as possible but despite best efforts the race had to be abandoned after the first mark rounding.

The long wait then began for the race teams as the race committee made every effort to change the course to find stable conditions. Unfortunately, the weather gods didn’t play ball and the call was made to cancel racing.

Joey Newton, two-time America’s Cup winner and INEOS Rebels Jib Trimmer

Joey Newton, two-time America’s Cup winner and INEOS Rebels Jib Trimmer, took the positives from the day;

 “It’s was a very long day on the water. We must have waited over three hours for the breeze to come and settle after completing race one but that is just sailing sometimes, the race committee tried their best, but the breeze just wouldn’t stabilise.

“On the positive side we did manage to win the one race of the day, the boat is really nicely set up, the crew are working well together, and we head into tomorrow’s racing full of confidence.”
